What is advent?
The very word itself means "arrival" or "coming." As Christians, we celebrate the Lord's coming - or arrival - that one starry night in Bethlehem long ago. Traditionally, the advent season lasts for four Sundays. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. While advent is certainly a time of celebration and anticipation of Christ’s birth during the Christmas season, it also serves as an anticipation for Christ's second coming - when He returns for His bride (the church) and defeats Satan and all things evil once and for all. Whether it is Jesus' first coming or His second, celebrating advent helps to remind us that God is faithful to His promise in sending His one and only Son Jesus Who stands alone as our blessed hope of salvation.
